These terms and acronyms are used in game chat channels and might be helpful to know, I'll update this as I think of more to add:
- AFK - Away From Keyboard. The player or party member has stepped away from the computer and is either (hopefully) standing/sitting someplace safe or is 'on follow'.
- BBL - Be Back Later. The player is logging off and may be back on at a later time. Of course, there's no guarantee.
- BIO - May also be stated as 'RR'. Basically the player has left the computer to go use the restroom.
- BRB - Be Right Back. The player or person may be at the computer or alt-tabbed in another checking info, their attention is focused elsewhere, but the interruption will likely be momentary. Players also use this when they're in a party and they want someone to wait where they currently are while they run off on a quick errand, such as a quest turn-in or an equipment repair. [ie- "brb, need to repair"]
- FTW - "For The Win!" Exclamation by players when they use a specific tactic to win a battle. "Sap, ftw! hahahha!!"
- GG - "Good Game", also: [GW] - Good Work. [NW] - Nice Work] . [GJ] - Good Job. [NJ] - Nice Job. [N1 or G1] - Nice One or Good One. Basicly a pat on the back for a good job in a group, raid or battleground.
- Grats - Congratulations [Gratz], [Nice!], [Sweet!]. A way of cheering in a chat for something good that's happened to a fellow player.
- GTG - This one is either "Good To Go." or I've "Got To Go" (as in log out). I've run across both and usually the player next action determines which it is.
- IGI - "I'm Going In!" Lets the group know the tank or party member is pulling.
- INC - Incoming. The party member either sees a mob(s) coming, or has pulled/is pulling a mob to the group.
- LF - Looking For [insert item/name/number/class here] - LFG - Looking For Group, LFM/LF1M - Looking For 1 More, LF Windripper, LF Tank. Players are 'looking for' something or someone.
- LOL - Laugh/Laughing Out Loud. Also: ROFL, LMAO, ROFLMMFAO, heh, haha. The player is laughing at something or someone. Probably you, lol.
- Loot - Treasure or items that drop in game. [aka Drop]
- Mats - Materials. Resources used for crafting. "LF enchanter, enchant gloves Sup SP, have mats, will tip."
- Mob - Old game term for Mobile [NPC]. I think this stems from the old text based MUD games, but I could be wrong. In-game it refers to PVE enemies or bosses.
- OMG - "Oh My Gawd!" Also: WTF?!, WTH?!, OMFG!! and/or Jeebus. In game expletive to express exasperation at another player or situation. "OMG! This player is such a nOOb, wtf is this guys issue?" [WT is What The ]
Owned - "Owned!" Also: pwn'd, pwnzor'd, ownage, ownzor'd, etc. One players exclamation to announce he/she has completely knocked another player's face in the dirt; making them endure an embarassing defeat. "Oh he thought he was gonna get away, he got OWNED!! *flex* Oh yeah! Sap, ftw!"
- nOOb - A Player considered to be acting stupidly or running about like a Newb, when they shoud know better. Being a nOOb around players frequently will not put you in anyones good graces. Try to use common sense, be courteous, and pay attention. We all make a nOOb move on occasion, admitting your mistake and not doing it again goes a long way in groups or parties.
- Newb - [Newbie]: Basicly a new and inexperienced player. Face it, you're gonna do something boneheaded when your new. Get up, brush yourself off and make a commitment to do it right next time. This will put you, mentally in the right state of mind.
- Ninja - A player or party member that steals loot, then usually runs or leaves (quits party or logs out). Being labels a ninja will NOT get you invited back into groups. Especially with their names posted on the WoW official forums. "What a friggin' loot Ninja....gawd I hate that."
- NM - Nevermind. Player started to ask for something or neeeded something then changed their minds.
- NPC - [Non-Player Character] Characters in the PVE world that run on established AI's set forth by the game code. Vendors, bosses, faction members, heroes...all are NPC's or "Mobs".
- PVP - Player Vs. Player. Obvious enough, players are fighting each other in a duel/arena or the opposite faction in a battleground.
- PVE - Player Vs. Environment, you against the big wide World of Warcraft.
- TY- Thank-you. [TA] - Thanks Alot. [Thx] - Thanks.
- wOOt! - An exclamation or cheer over a loot score, win or leveling.
- WTB - Want To Buy [insert item or service here]. ei- "WTB portal to Dalaran!"
- WTS - Want To Sell [insert item here]. ei- "WTS 20 Runecloth, 5G!"
- YW - You're Welcome. [Welcs] - You're Welcome. [NP] - No Problem.
